Preference points are awarded to applicants who apply for specific LDWF lottery hunts but are not selected. These points increase your chances of being selected in future lotteries. Here’s how the system determines and uses preference points:
-
Earning Preference Points
- The first time you apply to a lottery type, you will receive 2 preference points.
- You earn 1 preference point each time you apply for a lottery hunt but are not selected.
- Preference points accumulate over time, provided you continue to apply annually for eligible lotteries.
-
Using Preference Points
- When you apply for a lottery hunt, your total preference points are factored into the random selection process.
- Applicants with more preference points have a higher probability of being selected.
-
Point Expiration
- If you are selected for a lottery hunt, your preference points for that specific hunt type are reset to zero.
- Preference points remain valid as long as you apply each year. Failure to apply for a lottery hunt for consecutive years may result in a loss of accumulated points.
-
Viewing Your Preference Points
- You can view your current preference points by logging into your Louisiana Outdoors Account and under the Lotteries section on your dashboard, select View my Preference Points.
By consistently applying for hunts, you can build preference points and improve your chances of being selected in the future.
